Music
We believe that playing and listening to music increases brain activity. There’s a real connection between music and a child’s success, which is why we are devoted to a robust musical program at the Red Top.
Music education here begins in the Pre-K classes and extends through third grade. In the beginning, we explore music in many different ways — by listening, moving, singing, dancing, performing, and using creativity. We also introduce students to classroom instruments such as xylophones, drums, and recorders.
Every year we host a Christmas program for first grade students and a graduation program for kindergarten students in May. These performances entail a mini musical play or a program of varied song selections, often incorporating solos and instrument performance. Families are invited to attend these programs, which are designed to bring out the excitement and joy of performing.
In 2nd and 3rd grade, students learn how to be independent musicians and as well as how to work as a team through singing, instrument playing, and musical performances. Through various musical activities, they learn the basics of music literacy, ear training, and vocal training. It is the goal of our music department to inspire students to be creative, learn the discipline of practicing, and to develop an appreciation of the arts.
Each year our 2nd grade students perform a concert. We also offer an after school class that introduces students to playing the ukulele and reinforcing rhythm and steady beat through fun cardio drumming routines.
The musical programs at GES Red Top give students a strong foundation in music so they can move forward and perform in other musical groups, including band and different show choirs in higher grades.
Perhaps most importantly, we hope to cultivate a love and enjoyment of music that students will carry with them throughout their lives.
