GES Red Top Drum Fit

21st Century

Red Top students in Pre-K through third grade can sign up to participate in after-school skills and tutoring classes. The extended school days are made possible by a grant from the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center.

Students who stay after school for the 21st Century classes don’t just sit at their desks, doing more of the same work they did all day. These classes are outside the norm of a regular school day, including different types of hands-on activities, games, and arts and crafts.

Teachers make time for snack breaks and encourage students to get up and move around. The small class sizes, no more than 10 students per class, allow instructors a different experience from the routine school day as well.

Classes are divided into skills and tutoring options. Students may receive tutoring in math and reading.

Skills classes include:

  • Book Club — We have two clubs for different reading levels, a beginners group for new readers and an advanced class for chapter-book readers.
  • Kinesthetics — We rotate groups and perform lots of different exercises, from cardio workouts to sports to team-building games.
  • Music — We learn rhythm and practice on a variety of instruments. We also practice vocal music and Drumfit, which teaches rhythm and body movement.
  • STEAM — Students meet in the Kidzeum for a fun mix of hands-on projects and activities in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.

Classes are held after school until 5:30 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays during the fall and spring sessions. The summer session is held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday through Friday during the month of June.
